With the new school year comes a new group of students and a tough lesson for marijuana smokers.  Maryland University campuses are zero-tolerance when it comes to smoking weed in the dorms.

Students at the University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins are other Maryland, DC and Virginia campuses are finding dorms decidedly unfriendly to pot smokers.

Smoking can to lead to a possession charge, explosion the dormitory, loss of scholarship, and suspension. Distribution, even to friends, can lead to expulsion from the University.

Marijuana’s distinctive smell, both burnt and raw, has led to numerous arrests. Some students from California, Colorado or other pot friendly states are surprised by how seriously weed cases are treated in backward Maryland.

Resident dormitory contracts can allow university employees to enter student rooms without a warrant. Many students don’t realize that by agreeing to live in a dorm, they may be sacrificing their 4th Amendment rights.

A campus weed charge typically leads to a university disciplinary hearing and a misdemeanor charge in Maryland District Court.
