DC Council Votes to Decriminalize Weed – Maryland Still Lagging Behind

Tuesday Mar 3 (Washington). In an historic vote the DC Council approved 10-to-1 a bill decriminalizing possession of up to an ounce of marijuana. The law awaits the Mayor’s signature, the must pass a 60 congressional review.

When fully ratified, the new law will make possession of up to one ounce of marijuana a $25 fine. Smoking in public would still remain a criminal offense, as would possession on federal property (Rock Creek Park, the Mall, the Capitol), and operating a motor vehicle under the influence.

This new legislation places D.C. in the lead in marijuana law reform. Hopefully, it will spur Maryland to rethink its approach to weed too. Exciting times.
Stay tuned.
