The Maryland Cannabis Commission received 882 applications to sell, grow or process medical marijuana legally in the state. That is 8 times the total number of available licenses.
102 people applied for the 15 grower licenses. 705 people applied for the 92 dispensary licenses, and 75 applications were received for processor licenses (cannabis oil & tinctures)
The huge interest reflects the potential investors and activists see in Maryland, where the prospect of outdoor and greenhouse growing produces a more favorable business model. In neighboring DC, the small, indoor growers have been unable to meet demand, resulting in high prices and limited supply.
Maryland’s fields and greenhouses have lured applicants from around the county. Preliminary approval for licenses should be issued in January 2016. Stay tuned.
