In a bold rebuke to Republican governor Larry Hogan, the General Assembly overrode his veto and decriminalized public smoking of marijuana. The maximum penalty has been reduced from a criminal misdemeanor to a civil fine of up to $500.
The change means that public consumption is no longer an arrestable offense in Maryland. Not perfect – cause it’s still illegal to smoke in public – but much, much better than before. Paraphernalia (papers, pipe, grinder) has also been decriminalized. Stay tuned
